Special Olympics successÉxito en las Olimpiadas Especiales

On May 5, 41 student-athletes from District 131 participated in a regional Special Olympics track and field meet at Marmion Academy. Athletes included students from East High, Simmons Middle School, Krug Elementary and Beaupre Elementary.

Special Olympics coordinator Shelley Kruger considered the event very successful.

“The weather was amazing, and we had so many coaches, staff, parents and peers come out to support the athletes,” said Kruger. “Each of our athletes competed in either two or three events, so everyone was always on the move.”

Kruger added that the athletes were very excited, and that the smiles on their faces make all the hard work worth it.

The motto for Special Olympics is “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

The students from District 131 certainly did win. EA took home 26 gold medals, 23 silver medals, 21 bronze medals, eight 4th place ribbons, seven 5th place ribbons, 12 6th place ribbons, and four 8th place ribbons.

All of the gold medal athletes from the event have now qualified for the State Summer Games, which will take place at Illinois State University on June 7-9. Kruger said the athletes and coaches are excited to have an opportunity to continue to represent East Aurora at the State Summer Games.

The program is in the second year and participation numbers tripled this year. In 2019, the program expanded to Krug and Beaupre and hopes to continue to grow annually.

Thank you to coordinator Ms. Shelley Kruger, and all those who helped make this event possible, including the amazing team of student leaders and teachers who serve our students each day in District 131. Be sure to check back at this page again soon, for more photos from the event.
